I planted these sprigs last year and now I’ve got color on this otherwise barren-but-for-the-weeds area. Now I want it everywhere!

Each little offshoot can become its own mass of flowers.

Roxanne’s Gardening Tip: for a dry, sunny area where you want low-maintenance but high impact, plant Basket-of-Gold (aurinia). Here in the Lower Mainland of BC, it returns year after year and self-seeds.

I started years ago with a couple of ugly little rooted twigs that a friend gave me. She looked at me seriously and said, “You won’t believe what these will turn into.” Now I’ve got aurinia blooming all over this difficult, rocky area of my yard.

Each year I plant a few more sprigs in new places and each spring, I’ve got fresh spots of color! As you can see, they can get quite large, too. I love how they drip and drape over the edge of the rock wall.

This hardy perennial is also fragrant. It blooms for a couple of weeks in spring, then has a second, smaller bloom in summer.

I’m lusting after your rock wall. How lovely! The Basket-of-Gold is just that–unimagined riches adorning the wall. But then, yellow is my favorite color, which helps explain my passion for crocuses. The other part of the crocuses appeal is as harbingers of spring. Even when they bloom through the snow, I know that our winter confinement is nearly at an end.

Thanks for the gardening tips. My favorite spring flower is the creeping phlox because it brings the woodsy hills behind my house a live with color in the spring.

My favorite spring plant is yellow daffodils that come up in the front of our house. My teen loves to pick them and we keep them in our kitchen…they just look so happy!

I loooove tulips! They’re such cheerful plants to see, with all those colors. Sometimes, I think the more colorful plants can look a little fake/gaudy, but tulips just seem elegant to me :)

    • Roxanne Snopek April 8, 2015 at 9:00 pm

I agree, Sarah! Our local growers are showcasing tulips this weekend and the aerial photos are simply amazing… acres of color, I love it! Thanks for stopping by…
